A technical marvel in the heart of Bavaria

In the midst of the picturesque landscape of Upper Bavaria, an imposing white dome rises, amazement for decades. The Raisting Radome is not only an impressive building, but also a testament to technological excellence. But what lies behind this fascinating structure? Experience a monument that combines science, technology, and history.

A place with history

From progress to the future

The Raisting Radome was built in the 1960s, when the world began using satellite communications as a new form of global networking. Germany's first commercial satellite ground station was built here. This state-of-the-art facility enabled transcontinental telephone calls, television broadcasts, and intercontinental communications for the first time.

Significant historical moments

Important moments in history, such as the broadcast of the first moon landing in 1969 and the 1972 Olympic Games, were transmitted to the world through this facility. The Raisting radome was not only a technological pioneer, but also a symbol of global progress in an era in which the world was becoming more interconnected.

From operation to monument preservation

With the advancement of communications technologies, the radome lost its operational function in the 1980s. In 1999, it was listed as a historical monument and today serves as an impressive symbol of the advances in satellite communications.

Technology that inspires

A look inside

Beneath the simple but impressive dome lies a technological masterpiece: a 25-meter parabolic antenna, which once received and transmitted signals from space. The antenna could be aligned with high precision and weighed an incredible 280 tons.

A protective coat with function

What makes the radome special is not only the impressive size of the antenna, but also the innovative design of its protective casing. The air-supported casing consists of a plastic-coated textile membrane, which is constantly maintained in shape by means of supporting air blowers. This construction protects the sensitive technology from wind and weather.

A look into the past and future

Today, the radome offers a fascinating insight into a bygone era of technological history that decisively shaped the modern world. Visitors can not only view the impressive antenna up close but also learn more about the pioneering work of satellite communications.
